A new interpretation of Chonbukyung of Korean people’s spiritual
culture
Cheonbugyeong, which was made during King Hwanungcheon’s Baedalguk and passed
down orally to Dangun Joseon, was handed down by Choi Chiwon of Silla and Gyeyeonsu in
the late Joseon Dynasty.
With the publication of 『Handangogi』 containing the Cheonbugyeong in 1979, many
scholars, religious people, and the general public have interpreted the Cheonbugyeong in
various ways. Everyone who interprets Cheonbugyeong interprets it as oriental philosophical
knowledge, as well as the process of birth of life by God, or physics, astronomy, and
linguistics.
As a result of analyzing the correct Cheonbugyeong suitable for the spiritual culture of the
era of King Hwanungcheon before 2333 BC, when Dangun Wanggeom opened the Joseon
Dynasty, King Hwanungcheonwang, the ruler and saint in the era of Baedalguk, was the
‘being of nature’ and the creation of the universe and all things. It could be seen that the
principles were taught to the people in simple words that were easy to understand.
The Cheonbugyeong contains the profound truth that the universe and all things are
created, and that human beings are at the center of heaven and earth. Also, I think that it had
a lot of influence on the fundamental aspects of Chinese philosophy, such as Hao (河圖),
graffiti (洛書), and protagonists (周易).
