Abstract
In the long history of the Korean, the national names - Han, Joseon, and Goryeo - were
repeatedly used every few hundred to thousands of years. Through this, it was possible to
strengthen internal solidarity by emphasizing that the later state inherited the glory and
tradition of the previous state, and to confirm the systematicity and historicality externally.
But Buyeo basically maintained the national name of Buyeo during the period from
Bukbuyeo to Nambuyeo. Buyeo chose change whenever a nation’s crisis came with the
emergence of forces with strong leadership or the emergence of an emerging hegemonic state
in ancient international relations. The researcher defined this as a ‘division of state’. The
decentralization is not a method in which an existing powerful person is ousted and killed by
a rising force, but is a method of maintaining the royal family by moving to a different region
from his followers after abdicating. This is a different concept from the imperial state known
in ancient society, and is similar to the relationship of the clan(門中), a clan formed by the
separation of the head of the clan(宗中). In this regard, the division conditions were
presented. First, the founding process must be done in a peaceful way. Second, the existing
royal family and the new royal family must be connected by blood or system. Third, a divided
of state must move to a new place and establish itself. Fourth, there must be continuity of the
name of the country. Fifth, there is no unequal relationship between the home and the
country. Among them, peaceful agreements and procedures are the most important
conditions. This division was not first started in Buyeo, but the process of establishing
Sinsi-Baedal(神市-倍達) Dynasty from the Han(桓) Dynasty can be seen as the origin of the
division, and it can be said that Buyeo inherited and developed this tradition.
Through this study, two things could be presented. One is that the founding process of
Dongbuyeo and Seobuyeo, excluding Bukbuyeo, can be seen as division of state. And the other
was the younger cousin of Daeso, who surrendered to Goguryeo after the death of King Daeso,
and about 10,000 followers of Donbuyeo founded a new Buyeo (Nak’s Kingdom) in the
jurisdiction of Yeonnabu. So I suggested that the name of the Buyeo country be referred to as
“Seobuyeo” in accordance with the practice of being called “Direction + Buyeo.” In addition,
the genealogy of the entire Buyeo history was summarized through the [Division of Buyeo].
During the dynasty period, it was common for dynasty changes to usurp power through
force, but Buyeo was divided by peaceful means. Buyeo’s strong viability could be found in
that the division of state was made in a crisis situation of the state or the royal family.
