The Cheonbugyeong and the Philosophy of Jeongyeok
(Correct Change)
55) Yang Jae-Hack*
The reality and characteristics of the culture that blossomed in Hwanguk-Baedal-Dangun
Joseon Era, which is the root of Northeast Asian civilization, can be found in the
Cheonbugyeong (The Scripture of Heavenly Code). The Cheonbugyeong, which reveals the
core of the cosmology through the principle of numbers, is composed of eighty-one
characters, of which thirty-one characters are numbers. The Cheonbugyeong elucidates the
principle of creation of all things through the formula, nine times nine equals eighty-one
(9×9=81), and the Jeongyeok (Correct Change) also gives explanations for the question of the
fundamental transformation of time and space, and the history of time, and the evolution of
life, as based on the formula nine times nine equals eighty-one (9×9=81).
There are many ways to start learning the Cheonbugyeong, but the best code is probably the
Hadonakseo (“The Yellow River Diagram and Luo River Diagram”). Although the
Cheonbugyeong does not directly mention the Hadonakseo, it presupposes the number nine
of the Luo River Diagram and the number ten of the Yellow River Diagram.
In a nutshell, the Hadonakseo concept is common to both the Cheonbugyeong and the
Jeongyeok. There are two main ways to understand the Hadonakseo. One is the Juyeok (Zhou
Yi, The Book of Changes), which developed through the rule of composition of the Ba Gua
(The Eight Trigrams). The other is the Jeongyeok (Correct Change), in which the purpose
and process of the operation of time and space, including the problem of the composition of
all things, is revealed as a number pattern. It can be said that the Cheonbugyeong inherently
contains the principle of numbers, which has provided nourishment so that the Juyeok and
the Jeongyeok could be formulated from the beginning.
If this assertion is persuasive, then the Cheonbugyeong has sufficient merit to be a basis of
futurology as well as an archetype of human culture encompassing religion, philosophy, and
mathematics.
The Cheonbugyeong is the oldest document in the history of humankind and also the sutra
composed of the shortest texts. In addition, it contains not only the profound meaning of the
will of Heaven regarding the composition of the universe, but also infinite wisdom, including
the purpose of human life.
