Community consciousness reflected in Korean prehistoric petroglyphs
- Thinking about the public interest orientation of Korean prehistoric community-
Park, Sun-Sik
I considered the possibility through Daegok-ri petroglyphs and Cheonjeon-ri petroglyphs
in Ulju, a large petroglyph in the prehistoric period of Korea, in order to obtain clues to
connect with the concept of Hongik human beings presented in the literature of the Three
Kingdoms. However, as the concept of Hongik humans was not clearly confirmed in
prehistoric petroglyphs in the Ulju area, I felt limited in obtaining clues to be satisfied.
Nevertheless, I think it is meaningful that in some illustrations, members of the entire
community were able to extract a consciousness (a consciousness that would greatly
contribute) that wished for the benefit of the same community and its easy achievement.
In other words, it was judged that the figures identified at the top position of the
petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulju, showed a reflection of the combined will through a certain
line of sight. At first glance, the person in the shortest distance toward the working line of the
fishing dragon expressed on the right side of the top dances, the person in the middle puts his
hands together, and the person in the back holds a long bar-like instrument (flute) to his
mouth. However, it is an opinion that the three figures who show eye contact with the fishing
line expressed on the right are not unreasonable as they are related images reflecting a certain
meaning. In other words, it is a coincidence between the luck of those who sail by fishing and
the desire for a safe return. It is believed that the collection of people with the same view, in
which such a consensus mind is understood, cannot be said to have nothing to do with the
notion of Hongik people, the worldview of Korean ancestors recorded in the History of the
Three Kingdoms. If it is impossible to deny that all members are expressed in order to achieve
the common interest that the community desires, it may be an expression of a sense of
community with a desire to be of great help. In addition, through the fact that the
diamond-shaped repeated expression patterns felt in Cheonjeon-ri petroglyphs and the
multiple pairs of male and female animals are connected to the origin of reproduction and
reproductive worship, it is understandable that the concept of extreme prosperity is
expressed from a huge perspective. Therefore, it is believed that the petroglyphs of
Cheonjeon-ri also reflect the hope that they will be of great help in a large framework.
