                   By conquering southern Mesopotamia and  using the experiences  of the ancient in-
                 habitants of that land, the Sumerians learned how to dry swamps, dig streams, and do agri-
                 culture, and gradually established large and wealthy cities. Numerous and large Sumerian

                 cities represent the prosperous agriculture of the Sumerians as well as their extensive trade
                 with the surrounding nations.

                   The cities of Sumer each had an independent government and did not follow a centrist
                 system of governing. In addition to agricultural land, irrigation network and government,
                 each city had a temple. This temple, which had a stepped-shape structure, was called a

                 ziggurat. The temple was ruled by a man named Ensi. In addition to being a religious official
                 or priest, Ensi also ruled the city as governor or the king. 5)

                   In the scorched and dry land of Iraq, the only inhabitants that can grow are the palm trees.

                 This sunny and rainless region owes its name to the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates that
                 cross it. These rivers attracted the first human communities and civilizations. Many tribes
