Currently, academics are divided on the exact location of Salsu,
‘Seonchunryeong’, ‘Gongheumjin’.
One theory is that ‘the Salsu is a river in the Korean peninsula’, the Salsucheongsheon River;
the other theory tells that ‘the Salsu comes under the Hon River’ which is the part of the water
stream of the Yoyang River
These theories will be thoroughly examined through the historical material of
『Hwandangogi』 which will be the critical key to determine the exact location. Also regards of
the location of Seonchunryeong, Gongheumjin, two different stories are spoken, ‘Hanbando’,
’Tuman River’, which are similar with the stories of ‘Giljuleename’, ‘hamheungpyeongya’.
Many other papers including ‘Samguksagi’ claim that Gongheumjin and Seonchunryeong
are located 700 li north of the Tuman River.
The exact location of Gongheumjin and Seonchunryeong is still unknown with these two
different theories because the geographical names suggested in the historical documents are
difficult to confirm now.
An important source of material is in 『Hwandangogi 』 to determine and confirm the exact
location of Gongheumjin and Seonchunryeong, so we would like to take a close look at it.
