Gye Yeon-su’s Understanding of Cheonbu Gyeong
The records of the very first scripture, Cheonbu Gyeong,(“The Scripture of Heavenly Code”)
were written in Nokdomun by the command of Emperor Keobalhan Hwanung given to
Shinji Hyeokdeok.
During the Silla Dynasty, Goun Choi Chi-won obtained the Cheonbu Gyeong,(“The
Scripture of Heavenly Code”) engraved in Shinji in the old inscription, and made it as a 해서楷
書 into a book and passed it on to the world. and Gye Yeon-su(1864-1920, honorific name
‘Uncho’) compiled and named Hongiksaseo in 1897(1 year of Kwang mu) while serving Yi Gi
(1848-1909, honorific name ‘Haehak’) as his teacher.
Hongiksaseo refers to Cheonbu Gyeong(“The Scripture of Heavenly Code”), Samil
Singo(“The Discourse by the Three-One God”), Chamjeon Gyegyeong(“The Scripture of the
Way of Jeon”) and Taebaek Jinhun.
According to Yi Yu-rib(1907-1986), Haehak and Uncho named Hongik Saseo along with
Cheonbu Gyeong, Samil Singo, Chamjeon Gyegyeong, with Taebaek Jin-hoon, which was
included in the appendix of this Taebaek Il-sa(“The Hidden History of the Great Radiance of
Heaven and Earth”.)
He also said that the Cheonbu Gyeong, is not only the fundamental philosophy of the Badal
nation, but the original scripture of its people, as well as Samil Singo, Chamjeon Gyegyeong, and
Taebaek Jin-hoon.
Also, Yi Kwan-jip (1866-1947), a student of Gye Yeon-su, revealed to us that Gye Yeon-su
mastered both of the principles of Cheonbu Gyeong, and Samil Singo, and he also attained the
teachings of Cheondo. He knew that the mysterious laws of Cheonbu Gyeong was revealed
clearly to the entire world.
Gwangmyeong jang is a valuable historical material that has never been mentioned before,
even Yi Yu-rib has never mentioned it either.
Gwangmyeong jang refers to “a place where radiance stays’, originally meaning, ‘a place
where the nature of Buddha and Buddhism reside.” According to TaebaekIlsa and
HwangukBongi, Gwangmyeong is said to be the true virtue of the three gods. In other words,
it was named Gwangmyeongjang as a book with the true virtues of the three gods. this is the
reason why Gye Yeon-su titled book Gwangmyeongjang. This Gwangmyeong jang is also
meaningful as a material that can reaffirm the existence of Gye Yeon-su, which is mentioned
only in Hwandan Gogi and Haedong inmulji.
The first verse of Gwangmyeong jang starts as “오환고속吾桓古俗이 이제천위본以祭天爲
