Counteracting Strategy to China’s Historical Research Project for
Ancient Civilization
- Focused on ‘Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project’ and ‘Chinese Civilization
Exploration Project’ -
Lee Eel-Gul
The background of the Northeast Project carried out by China since 20 years ago is their
fear about the loss of Manchuria due to the Gando territorial dispute which may arise after the
reunification of the North and South Korea and their anxiety about the identity of Chinese
compatriots living in this area. Therefore, China had no choice but to distort the historical
origin and ancestral origin of ancient Korea, and falsely transformed Goguryeo and Balhae,
great powers at the time, into local governments of minority ethnic groups in the edge of the
midlands, based on the basic principle of the Northeast Project, “Theory of a Unified
Multi-ethnic State”. After the Northeast Project, they also continued to expand their
historical invasion of Korean history through the Baekdu Mountain Project, the Changbai
Mountain Culture Theory, the Yoha (Liao-ho) Civilization Theory and the Great Wall
Extension Theory.
Even though the ‘Xia-Shang-Zhou Chronology Project’had already been completed, the
‘Chinese Civilization Exploration Project’ was in progress, but we did not feel the seriousness
of China’s invasion of our history. Moreover, the Korean government did not even analyze
the purpose of China’s tenacious invasion of Korean history. Wu Dawei’s remarks to South
Korean government officials during his visit to Korea in 2004 revealed the purpose of China’s
Northeast Project. He said “If Korea does not claim that Gando is Korean territory, China will
not claim that Goguryeo was a minority ethnic country of China.”
China has already completed the ‘Cheongsa (Clean History) Project’ and Wang Oe (王巍)
trimmed and refined the ‘Propagation of Chinese Civilization Project’, which was proposed
in 2015, into ‘Chinese Civilization Propagation Project’ and presented to the National
People’s Congress again the following year. And as a result of China’s 20 years of promoting
the Northeast Project, they came to the conclusion that Gojoseon, Goguryeo, and Balhae that
existed in this region were local governments of minority ethnic groups in China, and the
historic remains and culture they left behind belong to China and become a part of Chinese
culture.
The ground that China distorted our ancient history was based on the ‘Ojebongi (Record
